The Importance of "Y2k"

I myself do not come from a religious background; therefore, the two-thousandth birthday of Jesus means no more than the nineteen-ninetieth or nineteen-ninety-second. I find it interesting that a single year can mean much more than any other.

In today's society, we judge present, past, and future events on how many years, months and days it has, or had taken place. We almost use the year "zero" as when everything on earth started. But why? Does every human male require his own calendar that uses his birth-date as an origin? Although there are other calendars that are used around the world, such as the Jewish calendar, they all base events on a past event that is chosen at the origin.

I could only guess as to how difficult it must be to choose when a society's calendar should begin. How tall men must stand believing that they can be the judge of what is an important enough event to be as significant as the dawn of time. How tall they are, as we think back, and yet how short we are in the cosmos.

In sum, the mark of the second millennium is not seen by every human born that side of the mark, so I do feel lucky; however, I feel just as lucky to see every January first, and equally lucky to see every other day. I just think it is too bad that a man must wait a thousand years to feel how beautiful life is.
