Altadena, a small city directly
north of Pasadena, borders on the Angeles National Forest. These mountains
are well known for the observatory on top of Mt. Wilson, and books such as
Trails of the Angeles. Along this border there are many outlets to
paths leading almost every direction. Nature enthusiasts, mountain bikers,
hikers, runners, rock climbers, and curious explorers all travel into these
local mountains. For those that wish to find that perfect trail, that ideal
hike, or that furthest camp, welcome to Trails of the Altadena Area.
The following content can be used by individuals who live in the local area,
those who live in Southern California and wish to visit Altadena's trails,
or anyone else on the Internet that is interested in this terrain.
It should be known that
even newly printed topographical maps contain areas where data is decades old.
This is because the maps have not needed to be updated since the city streets
have not changed. Outside of the city, streets (fire roads) and sidewalks (trails)
are continuously changing due to natural erosion, maintenance, or maintenance due to erosion.
Using the Global Positioning System (GPS), up-to-date, dependable, trail
and fire road locations have been determined. Available maps include topographical
("Map"), trails ("Paths"), and compiled satellite images
("Image"). These three options can be layered on top of each other
in some combinations to allow for a better understanding of the terrain.
Please note the meaning of each of the colors.
