IRC is chat software that I use and recommend. It offers numerous features that can be used by everyone from beginner chat to interactive scripting to file distribution. IRC is not software that is chosen over ICQ, but rather can be used at the same time to supplement each other.
You can log onto IRC by either of the following options:
Join via a Java applet without downloading software (This option is slow and lack robustness)
